Gauvreau, a Canadian born,
lifetime American, who has put his
vast experience in management into Cozumel VIP. Roger, with academic

recently, gained an exceptional reputation as a general manager and co

manager of a resort and later a dove and quail shooting lodge in
northern Mexico, has now created an amazing and incredibly well-managed
operation in the heart of Cozumel. If you think of Cozumel, as a destination for cruise ships, dispensing endless waves of tourists on this picturesque Caribbean island, you are absolutely correct, This is why Cozumel VIP is able to provide the unbelievable options that make this fly fishing venue so incredibly unusual. | For the all inclusive price
you can select any,
or all, of Roger’s
Options (if you have the time and energy). Options include fishing the beautiful flats, trolling for billfish in the Yucatán straight, diving in the gin clear waters over one of the finest barrier reefs in the world, snorkeling 10 yards from dozens of beach bars scattered about the island, golf on a beautiful new Jack Nicklaus course and countless other social/night life options. |
First
let's talk
about the fishing. The eastward end of the island of Cozumel has
extensive typical mangrove flats that have some of the most incredible
white sand, wader friendly waters, one could imagine. And talk about
easy access: here is that typical day goes. Roger gets you up at 5 a.m.
and a drowsy yell “ I’m Up “ will not do. Roger stands at your door
until you open it. After a wonderful typical Mexican breakfast, Roger
will drive you, in his new six seater van to the launch site, which is
about 20 minutes from Casa Rachel
(his wonderful Villa). The flats guide will be waiting for you in his
20 foot skiff powered with new 40 hp Yamaha engines to make the 10 to
15 minutes (yes that's right) to begin the fishing. From that point on it's like any bonefishing you have ever done. You know what the wind can do and you know what
cloud cover can do to make site casting for bonefish a nightmare. But
when that midday sun breaks through, and the waters calm, the bonefish
are there, they tail in the mangrove shadows, they streak by you before
you know they're there, and they're just as frustrating as any of the
bonefish you have tried to master. What's not there. is anyone else. In
three days of fishing. We did not encounter or hear another boat. The
guides speak more than adequate English and have been at their jobs for
a long time.If Bill fishing is something you have considered doing, think about this. Roger has a 31 foot Bertram, and a 35 foot Tiera. They are 10 minutes from Casa Rachel. Luis, head Captain, has been on the waters off Cozumel for over 40 years. He knows what he's doing. With two excellent mates five lines unleashed from Penn International reels we were trolling ballyhoo 15 minutes from leaving the marina. Five sailfish strikes, and one dolphin in the icebox was convincing proof that they have offshore fishing locked down. Luis's wife, Christina, is a certified dive instructor and their 40 passenger dive boat is berthed adjacent to the Bertram. And if you're not certified, but nevertheless want to do some incredible diving, both Luis and Christina are certified PADA dive instructors, and will have you safely 40 feet below, viewing the incredible sights in no time. |

All of the available activities
operate from CASA
RACHEL,
a three-story, five-year old stuccoed home in the Corpus Christi area
of Cozumel, named for the Roman Catholic Church in the neighborhood,
which chimes hourly. The Villa is approximately a 10 minute walk from
downtown, but it might just as well be 10 miles, because you will never
leave the house without Roger are one of his personal assistants,
making sure that you are completely attended to, with a chauffeur and
car complete with wine and beer coolers. The Villa is entered through a massive wooden door, through a delightful water garden, guarded by an equally delightful Daria who will not let you pass, unless you accept, one of her frozen margaritas. Welcoming leather furniture, surround-sound widescreen televisions throughout the house, and in the tropical walled garden pool with it’s Al fresco dining area, make being ”at home“, a pleasure. The main floor consist of three private bedrooms with baths in suite just off an upstairs lounge and pool table area. And on the third floor, a wonderful rooftop garden (here of an afternoon don’t be surprised to find a strawberry drounding in a glass of champagne, cavier, luscos kewe fruits and local cheeses), with trellises covered with Bougainvilla “provides stunning views of the azure blue Caribbean with glimpses of cruise ships from all over the world passing by. Roger has appointed the Villa marvelously and extra touches reflect his understanding of the expectations of sophisticated guest. Everything is scrupulously clean. |
If
you thought that a retired businessman might take a pass on the
dining, check this out. Red snapper baked in the banana leaves with
mango pico de gallo, plantain rice, followed by bananas flambé:
pan-seared dolphin with mango sauce. Jimmy Chimmichuri rice, black
beans A-LA-ROGER, followed by Southwest cheesecake in a chocolate
sauce, and incredible seafood paella with shrimp, clams, prawns, garlic
toast, followed by Three Milk Cake. And every course associated with
the proper wine to complement. One of the most enjoyable surprises, one
of God's little extras, was a tour Roger gave us of the south coast of
the island. There is an old, little used, but paved road running just
inside the Breakers for 15 to 20 miles. If the Caribbean were about
30° colder. the crashing surf could be considered equal to the
rocky Oregon coastline. It was just incredible to see mile after mile
after mile of unmolested shoreline, broken only by the occasional Beach
club, where one would stop for a drink and savor the most incredible
views. COZUMEL.VIP is a very hands on, personalized operation. Is it a Classic
Sports International WIFE APPROVED destination?? SI SI SENIOR BUBBA !!!
